LA DOLCE VITA: HOTEL BELLORA GOTHENBURG

l2The self-professed “pearl of the Avenyn”, the boutique Hotel Bellora did not disappoint with its handy location along Gothenburg’s main street, the Avenyn, right in the heart of the city’s shopping and dining district. With chic décor inspired by the Italian 50s and 60s, vintage photographs of Italian Hollywood starlet Sophia Loren adorned the walls of our room. Gorgeous vintage patterned wallpaper throughout the hotel also referenced 1960s glamour.

The Italian theme continued with designer brand toiletries by Missoni, and a constantly buzzing Italian restaurant on the ground floor which served sophisticated Italian dishes and wines throughout the day. The complimentary breakfast offered the full range of continental and cooked options and was so copious it was spread over two rooms. The generous offerings of top quality products allowed me to create a lovely breakfast of mushrooms on toast that would have rivalled that of any served in Sydney’s best cafes.

In keeping with the spirit of Italy, Bellora’s bar also served some excellent coffee. As guests of the hotel we were welcome to unlimited complimentary coffee at the bar for the duration of our stay. I certainly felt as though I were living la dolce vita in this charming Gothenburg hotel.

m1We booked the Party Package for our weekend stay at Bellora Hotel. The package included entry to the new nightclub “8ight” and a late check-out. I was a little worried when we were provided with ear plugs at check-in, but we were assured that our room was high enough from the ground-floor club next door so that we wouldn’t be disturbed by the sound of the night club’s pumping. With VIP access to this member-only club, I figured we’d be having too much fun partying to be worried about any noise in our room anyway.

Our young blonde hostess at check-in explained that our names had been added to the guest list at the door and that we should try to get to the club before midnight when the place really fills up. She told us it was her favourite club in the city, and she would be there herself tonight. I couldn’t wait!  After a late dinner we arrived at the club just before midnight to find it hadn’t opened yet. After about half an hour a queue had started to form, but by then we were starting to feel our age and  turned in for the night. I didn’t let this stop me from attacking the breakfast buffet the next morning as if I’d had a big night out!

So we didn’t dance the night away as hoped, but still had an enjoyable stay in this great central city hotel. Next time we’ll probably be booking the Party-Pooper package!
