I usually try to avoid staying in chain-brand hotels. I tend to prefer the character and warmth that generally characterises smaller boutique hotels, especially those of concept or design hotels such as those we’ve had the pleasure of staying in for many of our previous hotel stays. But a special promotion offered by the Hotel Mercure Lille Centre Vieux Lille presented a great value overnight rate that was just too good to pass up.
Recently renovated in a contemporary style, the trendy pastel-themed décor was a far cry from the tired bieges and greys usually associated with mid-range hotel chains. The lobby and lounge areas were surprisingly warm and welcoming, and a giant glass candy jar by the entrance was a nice touch that was especially appreciated by Merv!
In the heart of Lille’s Old Town (Le Vieux Lille), the hotel is perfectly positioned amid Lille’s characteristic 17th century brick town houses and winding cobbled streets. Located just off the lively restaurant-lined Rue du Gand, the hotel is within walking distance of Lille’s many attractions, including the Grand Place, the Cathedrale Notre Dame de La Treille and the Citadelle de Lille. Also a stone’s throw away are the picturesque Old Town shopping streets of Rue de la Monnaie, Rue Esquermoise and Rue Lepelletier. The Lille Europe and Lille Flanders train stations are also easily accessible on foot, making this hotel a convenient base for travelling by train from Brussels.
